The Grover Allman guitar pick dress was the brainchild of co-director Kevin Grover. What started off as a crazy idea has become an astonishing marketing tool. The dress was designed and manufactured by two fashion design students Johanna McGovern and Scott Faulder.
A competition was held at TAFE SA and this was the winning eye catching design, chosen from around 20 different entries, with the only design brief being that the dress must be completely covered in guitar picks.
There were submissions ranging from mini skirts to ballgowns, but the final design was chosen because the single shoulder, above the knee look suits promotional work. It also incorporates bright block colours, which are coming back into fashion.
Grover Allman’s design team devised the colour scheme; a purple gradient works its way up the body towards hues of red, orange and yellow.
There were over 3,500 picks used to manufacture the dress, which were all individually hand drilled and then sewn onto a fabric body.
Each guitar pick was white to begin with before being digitally printed a solid colour on each side. It took about four months to get it from the sketch pad onto our promo girl.
It is the only one of its kind in the world and while there have been offers to buy it, Grover Allman are holding onto this unique piece of marketing for the time being.

Courtney Seigle (bottom picture) wore this dress so well all weekend at NAMM in Anaheim back in January 2011. She was a trooper ! The dress actually weighs quite a bit and it is not the most comfortable thing.
